After documenting unfamiliar species on their expedition, Lewis and Clark delegated the official descriptions to scientists and artists, most of whom had never seen the species alive. With that in mind, I composed these images like scenes fabricated by stagehands. The plants are inspired by flattened herbarium specimens and the birds tuck in like flowers in a bouquet or float like boats among the foliage.
